  • Degree to be awarded by: Bahir Dar University, Subject to Senate Approval 
  • Standard Period of Study: 2 academic years (4 semesters) for regular, 3 academic years for the summer and 2 (1/2) years (Seven semesters -5 winter and 2 summers) for the extension programs
  • Commencement of the Program: 2009 E.C. / 2016 
  • Fees / Charge: Government sponsored and self –sponsored (private) 

          Program Objectives

By producing high level specialized professionals in adult education and community development, the program aims to: 

  • Improve the ability of coordinators and experts of adult education and community development to design  carry out effective community development programs and projects 
  • Enhance adult educators and community development workers skills in planning, organizing, coordinating and monitoring educational programs and projects
  •  Build the capacity of facilitators of adult and non-formal education programs in designing and providing relevant and need-based training using appropriate methods
  •  Facilitate the implementation of the national adult education strategy and development plans and strategies at different levels 
  • Provide inputs to policy and practice of adult education, lifelong learning and community development through research 
  • Develop capabilities for the provision of consultancy and technical services as well as short-terms specialized training for both public and private sectors \Produce adult education and community devilment planners and managers who can initiate changes, innovations and development by addressing local and regional needs and realities 
  • Produce change agents that can mobilize and involve the local communities and thereby strengthen development endeavors and community relationships 

         Graduate profile 

Graduates of an MA in Adult Education and Community Development are expected to possess advanced theoretical and practical knowledge, intellectual and life skills, and values that support employment, citizenship, lifelong learning, and personal development: 

  • Graduates will understand the theories, concepts, principles, and practices of adult education, non-formal education (NFE), informal and lifelong learning, and distance education.
  •  Community development theories, strategies, values, and practices
  •  Planning and management of development initiatives, community mobilization, and cross-cutting issues (e.g., gender, HIV/AIDS, family planning, environmental protection) 
  • Interdisciplinary relationships with other fields. Socio-cultural community behaviors 
  • Critical, conceptual, and reflective thinking to become effective practitioners 
  • Graduates will demonstrate Positive attitudes toward adult education and community development philosophies and principles 
  • Appreciation of values such as equality, participation, flexibility, and transparency Commitment to self-help, self-reliance, self-employment, and social responsibility Integrity, ethics in research and professional 
  • conduct Environmental consciousness and civic responsibility 
  • Respect for diversity, global awareness, and intellectual integrity
