Professor Delenasaw Yewhalaw, a renowned Professor of Medical Entomology at Jimma University and Founding Director of the Tropical and Infectious Diseases Research Center (TIDRC), visited Tana Research and Diagnostic Center (TRDC) to share his practical experience and insights on establishing and operationalizing research laboratories in resource-limited settings.
During the visit, Professor Delenasaw toured the Center's facilities, particularly its core laboratories that have begun initial operations. The tour provided him with an opportunity to observe the existing infrastructure, assess the progress made so far, and gain a firsthand understanding of the Center's current stage of development. The visit was guided by Dr. Bekalu Wubshet, Chief Executive Director of the College of Medicine and Health Sciences.
The visit was followed by an experience-driven discussion forum in which Professor Delenasaw reflected on the practical realities of building functional, sustainable, and impactful research laboratories. Drawing on his extensive experience in establishing and leading research facilities, he shared valuable perspectives on the institutional, technical, human-resource, infrastructural, and operational considerations essential to translating the Center's vision into a fully functioning research center.
His reflections offered practical guidance on how to progressively establish and operationalize the Center's intended laboratories, emphasizing the importance of strategic planning, institutional commitment, capacity development, resource mobilization, effective management, and sustainable partnerships.
The interactive session, moderated by Dr. Bekalu Wubshet, brought together staff members and college leadership in an engaging exchange of ideas. Participants raised questions and shared concerns regarding the challenges and opportunities involved in developing the Center's research capacities.
