Department of Midwifery

Overview

The Midwifery Department at Bahir Dar University (BDU), part of the College of Medicine and Health Sciences (CMHS)plays a vital role in training professionals who contribute to sexual, reproductive, maternal, newborn and child health in Ethiopia and beyond. Established to address the high demand for skilled maternal care providers, the department focuses on producing competent midwives through high-quality education, practice, and research.

To become the leading midwifery department in Ethiopian Universities through quality education, research, and community service

Mission

To prepare competent, compassionate, respectful, and caring midwives who can provide sexual, reproductive, maternal, newborn and child health (SRMNCH) services at community and health facility levels with focus on health promotion and disease prevention.

Objectives

To produce competent and compassionate midwives who can address the country’s sexual, reproductive, maternal, newborn, and child health needs.

Academic Programs

The department offers both undergraduate and postgraduate program.

Staff Profile

The department has 33 faculty members. Of these, 3 (1 female and 2 males) are associate professors, 14 (2 females and 12 males) are assistant professors, and 16 (11 females and 5 males) are lecturers. Currently, six faculty members are pursuing their PhD, one of whom is about to complete his studies and will be rejoining the department soon.

Additionally, the department has one administrative staff member (a secretary). There are also 3 technical assistants for the program whom they are under the central quality office. 

 

Research and Innovation

Faculty members in the department have been actively involved in the university’s research grant competitions, conducting numerous studies, and publishing in international journals in their areas of specialization, particularly in maternal and child health, reproductive health, midwifery education, and both communicable and non-communicable diseases.

Facilities and Learning Resources

  • Sufficient class rooms dedicated for teaching and PBL coordination.
  • Library prepared with reading rooms, borrowing services, and reference assistance.
  • Skill lab equipped with high fidelity mannequins for clinical simulation exercises.
  • SMART boards for audiovisual support.
  • A mix of master’s, assistant professors, associate professors and PhD-qualified staff members.

    Community Engagement and Partnerships

The Midwifery Department has been actively engaging with the community through student (both undergraduate and postgraduate) attachments, including the Community- Based Training Program (CBTP), Team Training Program (TTP), and Developmental Team Training Program (DTTP). In addition, faculty members have been providing direct services at health centers in Bahir Dar as part of their community service. Most of the health institutions in Bahir Dar City serve as affiliation sites for our students and staff.

    Student Life

Our college offers an excellent environment and culture that support learning. Student support services, such as counseling, career advising, and tutoring, are readily available. In addition, students are encouraged to participate in extracurricular activities, including clubs, sports, and professional associations. Furthermore, the college provides comfortable living and housing facilities, including well-maintained dormitories.
