Directorate of Medical Laboratory Science Education and Services

The Directorate of Medical Laboratory Science Education and Services was established in 2011 with the creation of the former Department of Microbiology, Parasitology, and Immunology. Initially, the department offered postgraduate programs in Medical Microbiology and Medical Parasitology & Vector Control. In 2016, the undergraduate Medical Laboratory Science program was introduced. Today, the school encompasses Medical Microbiology, Medical Parasitology, Hematology and Immunohematology, Clinical Chemistry, Immunology and Molecular Biology, and Laboratory Management and Quality assurance education and service.  It is supported by a team of 82 academic and clinical staff members.

Programs Offered:

  • Undergraduate: 
    • Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Laboratory Science.
  • Postgraduate (MSc):
    • Medical Microbiology
    • Medical Parasitology and Vector Control
    • Clinical Hematology and Immunohematology
  • The directorate is also working towards launching PhD programs in Microbiology, Parasitology, and Molecular Biology.

The directorate envisions to become a leading institute in Africa in solving societal health and health related problems. The mission of school of medical laboratory science education and services are:

  • Education: Train competent medical laboratory professionals specializing in fields such as Medical Laboratory Science, Medical Microbiology, Medical Parasitology and Vector Control, Clinical Hematology and Transfusion Medicine, Clinical Chemistry, Quality Assurance, Laboratory Management and Quality assurance, and Molecular Biology and Genomics, equipping them to address local, national, and global health challenges.
  • Capacity Building: Provide continuing professional development training to enhance the knowledge and skills of health professionals and academicians across the region and country.
  • Service: Strengthen and actively engage in delivering evidence-based and high-quality clinical and community services.
  • Research and Innovation: Conduct advanced and problem solving research in health and health-related fields, fostering technology transfer to address pressing health issues.
