DEGREE NOMENCLATURE

The nomenclature of the degree in shall be

In English: ‘Doctor of Philosophy in Management Studies’

In Amharic: ‘የፍልስፍና ዶክትሬት በስራ አመራር ጥናት'

Eligibility:

Master’s degree in management and management related courses.

Minimum Masters CGPA required will be decided as per the university’s legislation.

Management and Management related fields generally include the following:

Master of Business Administration (MBA)

Masters in Public Management

Masters in Management

Masters in Public Policy

Masters in Leadership and Management, and

Any other related degrees mean that the candidate should have studied at least three of the following subjects in his/her Master’s degree as core subjects.

Principles of Management

Human resource Management

Financial Management

Public Management

Marketing Management

And Masters’ Thesis ranked as ‘good’ or above.

Pass’ in an MBA project.

(Admission committee is the final authority to decide the eligibility in case of doubt)

Admission to this program will be made through an Entrance Test, Interview and previous academic and research performance of the candidate:

A statement of purpose that should answer two fundamental questions.

Why do you want to pursue PhD in your chosen concentration?

What are your career goals after you obtain your PhD?

The admission committee is to decide the mark depending on the applicant’s quality of statement of purpose in relation to the above questions.

10. Duration of the PhD Program

This PhD program in Management Studies will have a duration/tenure as per the university legislation.

The students are expected to finish the course work in the first year and the rest of the years can be utilized for research work as stipulated in the guidelines.

Course work will be for the first one year duration with two semesters

Course work consists of four courses - two courses in each semester

The program is consisting of three core courses [compulsory courses] and one elective course.

Elective courses will be arranged by the PhD program coordinator in consultation with the head of the Department taking into consideration the availability of teaching staff

After passing the course work the student can take up the research work in the selected or related topics from the electives of the course work.

No student will be allowed to undertake the research if he fails to qualify in the course work within one year from the date of completion of the first year. i.e. in the subsequent and successive one attempt after completion of his/her first year.

Course work details are given in the course structure table (ref 9.1).

The details of the courses, title and the credits and Marks assigned are given in para 9.1.

Course Codes have been given according to University norms.

After completion of the course work a student becomes eligible to take up research under an assigned guide.

Advisor will be assigned by the Head of the department or the dean.

Scholars decide a topic in consultation with their guide from their electives or related only.

A well defined research proposal is to be selected and submitted at the earliest possible time and students are expected to give a power point presentation of the proposal before embarking on the research process.

There shall be continuous monitoring of the progress of the student by the guide and intermittent reports of the progress will be submitted by the student to the program coordinator and/or department.

An annual review process shall take place.

It is mandatory for students to attend the seminars and workshops and they are expected to submit their critical analysis on the above activities to the guide throughout the study period.

A research proposal has to be submitted, defended and get approval before a student embark on the full-fledged research.

The format of proposal and its constituents will be decided by the guide in accordance with the established guidelines.

A power point presentation is mandatory before final submission of the synopsis and thesis to incorporate changes, if any, suggested by other Doctoral members and scholars including Guide.

It is a prerequisite for a PhD scholar to get published at least two articles in peer reviewed reputable research journals before submitting the thesis out of these one must be published in our college journal.

The final thesis must be approved and cleared by the Guide under his certification before presentation to the Defense committee.

A student must submit completed thesis to the defense committee before two months of the date of presentation.

The defense is open to the academic community.

Graduation Requirements

A candidate shall be declared eligible for the award of the PhD in Management Studies upon fulfilling the following conditions:

Passing grades (minimum “B”) in all courses

Passing grade (minimum “Good”) in PhD thesis

Minimum CGPA of 3.00; and

Fulfillment of all the requirements stipulated by the rules and regulations of the graduate degree program of Bahir Dar University
