1. BACKGROUND OF THE PROGRAM

Bahir Dar University (BDU) was inaugurated in May 2000 (1992 E.C.) when the former Bahir Dar Teachers College and Bahir Dar Polytechnic Institute joined together to become the Education and Engineering Faculties, respectively, of the new University.

The College of Business and Economics developed from the former business department and subsequently expanded into a faculty and then a college. The curriculum states that the College’s attention shifted toward PhD programs in response to the national need for highly qualified scholars, and that PhD in Logistics and Supply Chain Management was planned as an additional doctoral program.

2. COURSE BREAKDOWN AND DELIVERY

All courses in the PhD program are offered on a semester basis. Coursework is expected to be completed in the first academic year; research work is undertaken thereafter. During the first year, students are expected to complete coursework and, in the subsequent years, develop research proposals, prepare research work, present seminars, and work on the dissertation.

3. LEARNING, ASSESSMENT, RULES AND ADMISSION

Learning and Assessment Methods

The curriculum uses theoretical and practical applications, problem-based learning, case studies, seminars, presentations, research projects, and other assessment approaches. Students are expected to present research papers and participate in seminars and academic activities.

	Admission Requirement Admission requirements shall be as per the Senate legislation of Bahir Dar University. Applicants from Logistics and Supply Chain Management, procurement management, transportation management, business management/administration, economics, marketing management and other related disciplines can apply. The LSCM Department determines whether the applicant’s Bachelor’s and Master’s backgrounds are sufficiently related.
	Grading System The grading system shall be as per the Senate Legislation of Bahir Dar University.
	Graduation Requirements The graduation requirements shall be as per the Senate Legislation of Bahir Dar University.
	Medium of Instruction English.
	Duration Four years (48 months): the first year is dedicated to coursework and the remaining three years to research work, including dissertation writing, publication of journal papers and defense of research results. Extension is subject to Bahir Dar University Senate legislation.
