Professor Mammo Muchie has made a speech on Ethiopianism in an aim to building solidarity among Ethiopians. He also gave a lecture on research and publication in another session.

The speaker, Professor Mamo Muchie, who is by profession a professor of science, technology and innovation, raised an issue which appears far from his field of study. He happens to be more interested in history and particularly on Ethiopian history as a response to eternal love for his country. He said his love and obsession with knowing more about Ethiopia has grown high when he experienced how people in South African countries react to Ethiopians and Ethiopianism philosophy. This experience, he argues, informs him that Ethiopians don’t know themselves and how powerful their impact is at global level.

The professor said Ethiopianism as a philosophy and religion has emerged after the historical defeat of the white colonizers by Ethiopians who were determined to declare their freedom at any cost. Due to this, Ethiopians have become spiritual strength to all the colonized because of Adwa that recorded the defeat of the white colonizers by the fearless and high-spirited Ethiopians. The professor added, the victory of Adwa has electrified the spirit of resistance and the urge for emancipation among the colonized.

While putting the contribution of Ethiopian people to the world, he said that Ethiopia did not provide material help to the world but spiritual public good by defying colonial aggression. In conclusion to his talk, the professor urge the audience and the academic community to craft the ‘third Ethiopian manifesto’ that will help transcend Ethiopia to a new high in every parameter.

The professor in his second session talked about research and the tips that help academicians in publishing in highly rated reputable journals. The president of Bahir Dar University Dr. Firew Tegegn on the occasion handed professor Mammo a letter appointing him as an adjunct professor at the Institute of Technology, Bahir Dar University.

In the event, the university’s officials, teachers, students and other interested people both from the university and outside participated.

A speech on ‘Women in Ethiopian history’ Delivered

====================================

Playwright and Poet professor Fikre Tolossa delivered a public lecture on ‘Women’s contribution for the civilization of Ethiopia’ at Bahir Dar University, Peda campus.

In his talk, Professor Fikre highlighted the significant roles women played at different levels in governing Ethiopia. He argues that this fact signifies the level of mental civilization Ethiopians had which was markedly better than the situation today’s civilized nations have been in the past. He added gender was only an agenda in the twentieth century while females had enjoyed the highest positions in Ethiopia thousands of years ago. The professor used different historical documents to support his claim.

In the meantime, the professor talked a little about the current hostile situation in Ethiopia. As a reaction to the race based clashes happening in different parts of Ethiopia, the professor in his speech stressed the importance of unity in nation building, and he said it is the right time to try to push the reform in Ethiopia to reach to a level that ensures all rounded sustainable development. He mentioned the recently happening seemingly race based confrontations. He argued it is illogical for Ethiopians to fight on race basis as all the people are from the same race based on scientific evidences.

The conflict between different language speaking people in Ethiopia, he said, is analogous to a conflict that may happen between siblings who happened to be born in two different places which made them to be speakers of the respective languages. Such race based conflicts, according to the professor, are barbaric and what is even worse in Ethiopian context is that it happens between people from one race.

In the lecture, university’s officials, teachers, students and interested personalities from out of the university have participated.

In an effort to produce qualified graduates, to conduct problem solving researches and to engage in various fruitful community based activities, collaborative works with other academic institutions and stakeholders is crucial. In this regard,Bahir Dar University is actively engaged in working collaboratively with professional organizations, national, continental and international institutions creating free scholarship and fellowship opportunities both for the teachers and students. Also, opportunities are opening up to our university community to participate in different projects that require collaborative effort of various institutions.
To further scale up the benefit gained from different collaborations, Bahir Dar University signed an agreement to be a member of the East African Agricultural Universities Forum. Being a member of this forum is believed to create many new opportunities for the university community. Therefore, concerned bodies in our university should work closely with the forum for a pronounced result.

Three academic units of BDU, College of Agriculture and Environmental Science, Institute of Disaster Risk Management and Food Security Studies, and School of Earth Science, jointly hosted the 5th annual national conference on the theme “agriculture and environmental management for sustainable development” from June 01-02, 2018.

Despite the efforts being made by different stakeholders and actors, the country is increasingly facing devastating natural resource degradations, environmental pollution, climate change, and other various manmade and natural disasters and risks, said BDU’s Vice-President for Research and Community service Dr. Mulunesh Abebe in her opening speech. She particularly mentioned the water hyacinth on Lake Tana.

The conference and its themes will help in creating consciousness and would push us to raise questions on what we are doing so far and on the value of our existence as scientific community, she added.

Dr. Solomon Addisu, Dean of College of Agriculture and Environmental Science, noted sustainable development goals, the country’s vision of becoming a middle income country by 2025 including the continental developmental roadmap(agenda 2063) and other domestic strategies and policies as background motives of the conference. He elaborated that in light of these goals the three academic units are playing a significant role in capacity building, research and community outreach programs.

Decision makers from federal and regional government agencies, academicians from different public universities and research institutes have attended the conference.

BDU’s Geo-spatial Data and Technology Center has held the 5th national Geographic Information System (GIS) Summit from 11-12 of May 2018 at Wisdom Hall, Bahir Dar University.

The university’s vice president for research and community service, Dr. Mulunesh Abebe, after welcoming the participants of the summit, said that Geo-spatial data and technology nowadays has made human activity and life easier particularly in the developed world. In Ethiopia the utilization of the sector is still limited and BDU is committed to support and be part of the solution for the development of Geo-spatial data and technology in the country, she added.

The focus of this year’s summit is identifying the gaps between researchers and decision makers of the field and discuss on how the sector could contribute for the development of the nation, said the Center’s director Dr Daniel Ayalew.

Bahir Dar University established the Geo-spatial Data and Technology Center as one of its research center aimed at spatial data based research, Geo-spatial data archiving and supporting stakeholders.

Decision makers from different government and non-governmental institutions including the director of Ethiopian Geospatial information agency, Mr. Sultan Mohamed, have attend the summit
