More than 8,000 students of Bahir Dar University have graduated in five graduation ceremonies held between July 3 and 17, 2010. The graduates included candidates from the regular, extension and distance programs of the University. All the ceremonies took place in the premises of the Martyrs’ Monument on the banks of the Blue Nile (Abbay) River. Two things made this year’s graduation special. The first is that among the graduates were the first batch of students who did their BSc in Land Administration and the third batch of students who completed their BSc studies in Disaster Risk Management and Sustainable Development (DRMSD). Bahir Dar University is the only higher education institution in East Africa offering training in Land Administration, and the only of its type in the country to offer DRMSD programmes. The other thing that made the July 17 graduation ceremony colourful was the fact that in its long history BDU conferred for the first time an honorary PhD Degree upon the Honourable World Laureate Dr. Tibebe Yemane Birhan.
All the graduation ceremonies were colourfully celebrated in the presence of guests from the Federal and Regional Governments as well as other development partners.

BDU’s Tenth Anniversary Celebrated
The tenth anniversary of the foundation of Bahir Dar University was colourfully celebrated on May 6, 2010 in the main campus’ auditorium. It should be recalled that BDU was inaugurated on May 6, 2000 when the Polytechnic Institute (founded in 1963) and the Academy of Pedagogy (established in 1972) were united to form Bahir Dar University. The anniversary was officially opened with an opening speech by Dr. Yeshimebrat Mersha, President of Bahir Dar University. The celebration was marked with such events like music, circus show, and poetry contest. Long serving lecturers including Ato Taddese Mengistu, Ato Gebeyehu Ayalew, Ato Nigusse Kassahun and Dr. Awol Endris were invited to make speeches based on their experience. It was an event when the past history and achievements of the university were unfolded and future paths of development were suggested.
