Bahir Dar University (BDU) was inaugurated in May 2000 (1992 E.C.) when the former Bahir Dar Teachers College and Bahir Dar Polytechnic Institute joined together to become the Education and Engineering Faculties, respectively, of the new University.

The College of Business and Economics is one of the colleges of the university which was initially established as department of Business. The then department had only been offering business courses in the field of SSOM and Accounting at the diploma level. After May 2003, the program of Business had grown up to Faculty of Business and Economics with the following departments under it; department of Management, Accounting, Business (by joining Economics and Secretarial Science and Office Management), and Law. In 2004/05, the Faculty restructured itself and the department of Economics stood by itself and program of Business Education came as a new additional department to the Faculty. Since 2009/10 the Faculty of Business and Economics has grown up to college and become the College of Business and Economics. In the present time, the college has six under graduate programs namely Marketing Management, Logistics and Supplies Chain Management, Economics, Accounting and Finance, Management, Tourism and Hotel Management. These programs are available through regular, evening (continuing education), and summer modalities. Besides, the college has five post graduate program namely MA in Marketing Management, MBA, MA in Accounting and Finance, MA in Logistics and Supply Chain Management, and MA in Development Economics. As part of becoming, one of the top premier college’s in the country, the college shifts its attention to the PhD program and currently hosts four PhD Programs in Development Economics, Management Studies, Accounting and Finance, and PhD in Marketing. Beyond producing skilled professionals including business and logistics managers, accountants, economists, and marketing specialists the college upholds its public responsibility by contributing to national and regional development. It actively engages in research, community service, policy dialogue, and other initiatives to support the country's growth and progress.
