Bahir Dar Institute of Technology, Bahir Dar University (BiT-BDU), hosted a three-day training workshop focused on Sustainable Land Management for Enhanced Soil and Water Conservation in northwestern Ethiopia. The training, organized and led by Bahir Dar University (BDU), in collaboration with the University of Ghent (UGent), brought together 30 extension workers from nine woredas in the Amhara Region, areas most severely impacted by land degradation.

The workshop aimed to disseminate key research findings and insights from various initiatives, including the VLIR-UOS TEAM (Tana Hydro-geo project), VLIR-UOS IUC (Hydro(geo)logy project), PEER-USAID projects, and the new VLIR-UOS SI project on Shallow Groundwater and Its Sustainable Use for Safe Water Supply and Irrigation in Rural Communities of the Lake Tana 5/20 Basin.

The workshop pursued to enhance the effectiveness of government-led soil and water conservation practices. Emphasis was placed on improving strategies to reduce soil erosion, increase groundwater recharge, and ensure the long-term health of ecosystems all at a lower cost.

The workshop also facilitated collaboration between practitioners and researchers to co-create improved management practices in water and land resource areas.
