Tibebe Ghion Specialized Hospital Launches Regional Pharmacovigilance Center to Advance Patient Safety

Bahir Dar, Ethiopia – July 1, 2025: In a major step toward enhancing patient safety in the Amhara Region, Tibebe Ghion Specialized Hospital, in partnership with the Ethiopian Food and Drug Authority (EFDA) – Bahir Dar Branch, has launched a Regional Pharmacovigilance Center to strengthen drug safety monitoring and response.

“This center marks a critical advancement in ensuring the safety of every patient in our care,” said Dr.Bekalu Wubshet, Chief Executive Director at College of Medicine and Health Sciences/ Tibebe Ghion Specialized Hospital. “By detecting and responding to adverse drug reactions more effectively, we can protect lives and elevate the quality of healthcare delivery.”

Pharmacovigilance plays a critical role in identifying and preventing medication-related risks. The new center equips healthcare workers with tools, training, and data to make informed decisions and ensure safer treatments.

EFDA representative Mohammod Oumer emphasized the center’s role in supporting national drug regulation and improving public health outcomes.

The center enables real-time ADR reporting, empowers health workers through training, raises public awareness about drug safety, and contributes to national and global safety databases.
