Overview of the Department
The Textile Design department (Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in Textile Design) at Ethiopian Institute of Textile and Fashion Technology, Bahir Dar University was established in 2017 E.C (2024 G.C). Textile Design is a specialized version of Textile engineering degree that focuses on the design and art of the textile involved in the production, finishing, dyeing, printing, and treatment of textile materials. The Textile Design Department is the creative centre where artistry meets technology, and imagination in textiles into reality. It is a dynamic field dedicated to the conception, creation, and application of surface pattern, texture, and structure for fibers, yarns, and fabrics used in fashion, interiors, products, and art. It is a vibrant blend of traditional craft and digital innovation. This interdisciplinary field combines principles of spinning, weaving, knitting, non-woven, chemical engineering, materials science, and textile technology.
Textile Designers explore into cultural history, art movements, and global trends for inspiration, while also pioneering the use of eco-friendly dyes, recycled fibers, and zero-waste production methods. The department serves as a critical bridge between creative vision and industry application, ensuring designs are not only beautiful but also technically viable, market-ready, and responsibly produced.

l Indigenous Textile Research Centre
The Indigenous Textile Research Centre could be the backbone of the program focusing on the study and advancement of indigenous textile arts, encompassing decorative, ceremonial, and practical creations made from plant, animal, or synthetic fibers. Highlighting the unique use of color, patterns, and techniques by indigenous artists, the ITRC aims to preserve and promote cultural stories while advancing research in textile fibers, yarns, fabrics, and wet processing. The center supports the textile and apparel sectors, hand-based industries, agriculture, and education through advanced research, problem-solving, and training. It also emphasizes scientific dissemination through publications, seminars, and workshops, inspiring innovations and modifications for local communities to explore artistic and practical applications of textiles.
