Bahir Dar Institute of Technology and Partners in Education Ethiopia Sign Landmark Agreement to Transform Regional Schools

In a significant move to strengthen the connection between higher education and primary schooling, the Bahir Dar Institute of Technology (BiT-BDU) and Partners in Education Ethiopia (PiEE) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to launch a comprehensive educational advancement program across the Amhara region.
The partnership, formalized in March 2026, seeks to combine BiT’s technical expertise with PiEE’s community-driven approach to revitalize schools, improve learning outcomes, and foster innovation among students.
A Multi-Dimensional Approach to Education
The MoU outlines a holistic strategy aimed at transforming schools through multiple key initiatives:
• High-Quality Resources: Addressing resource inequality by providing inclusive play and learning materials suitable for children with and without disabilities. 
• WASH Facilities: Enhancing water, sanitation, and hygiene infrastructure, including well drilling, wastewater treatment, and hand-washing stations. 
• STEM and Innovation: Opening BiT’s laboratories and innovation centers to younger students, offering summer camps, science fairs, and hands-on exposure to science and technology. 
• E-Learning & Technology-Enabled Education: Delivering remote professional development for teachers and interactive multimedia content for students. 
• Greening and Gardening: Promoting play-based learning through school gardens and greenhouses, teaching students skills in agriculture and environmental stewardship. 
Bridging Research and the Classroom
The collaboration uniquely integrates engineering research with community needs. A professional team of hydrologists, geologists, mechanical engineers, and agronomists will ensure that school facilities are both sustainable and scientifically robust.
BiT will also develop innovative, cost-effective solutions tailored to local schools, testing prototypes and applying research to solve challenges while leveraging local materials.

The agreement was signed by Dr. Mitiku Damtie, Scientific Director (Vice President) of BiT, and Yehalem Abebe, Executive Director of Partners in Education Ethiopia.
