Mr. Elias Sime has successfully defended his PhD dissertation in the Faculty of Civil and Water Resource Engineering, department of Water Resource Engineering and Management at Bahir Dar Institute of Technology, Bahir Dar University (BiT-BDU). His research, titled “Integrating Remote Sensing with Machine Learning for Water Resources Monitoring and Management”, was conducted under the supervision of Prof. Seifu A. Tilahun, from Bahir Dar Institute of Technology (BiT), International water management institute (IWMI) and Dr. Fasikaw Atanaw, from Faculty of Civil and Water Resources Engineering. BiT-BDU.

Elias’s research aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of integrating ML with RS for monitoring water resources and assessing flood hazards in data-scarce regions. Besides, the study Evaluate ML-RS integration using Landsat 8 OLI for optically active parameters and assess ML-RS integration for optically non-active parameters (total nitrogen, total phosphorus).

External examiners, consisting of Dr. Asfaw Kebede, from Haramaya University and Dr. Abeyou Wale, from International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA), Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. During the defense, both the internal examiners and the attending audience posed numerous insightful questions and comments, to which Mr. Elias provided thorough and detailed responses.
