Brief Message
For the role it plays in society, education is recognized as a fundamental legal right for every child. However, despite this recognition, many children remain out of school, and many of those who have access to education still lack basic literacy and numeracy skills. On the other hand, returns from education depend on the strength of the country’s education system. And the strength of that system depends on the investment a country makes in education. The public expenditure on education and the percentage of GDP allocated indicates the government’s policy emphasis on education.
Moreover, investment in education should focus on improving the quality of the workforce, as students success depends heavily on the quality of the workforce. While I acknowledge that the quality of education is multifaceted and viewed from various perspectives, I argue that it is overwhelmingly dependent on the quality of the workforce. This is where my call to the College community, and particularly to instructors, comes in. We must continuously improve ourselves professionally to stay up- to-date with educational developments and the dynamics of the world. The quality of education we provide changes only if we commit ourselves to this cause. It is quality education that can positively impact the academic, professional, and personal lives of graduates.
Thus, regardless of the compensation we receive, we must work hard for our students. We must ensure that we provide education that meets the highest standards. Becoming an educator is a choice to fight ignorance and poverty. We have chosen to be the guiding light for the nation. We respect our patriots because they fought for freedom. As the saying goes, “Education is the key that unlocks the golden door to freedom,” by becoming an educator, we too are serving as patriots. I kindly call all education stakeholders to engage in continuous learning and commit to the noble cause of addressing the deep-rooted problems of our nation. Let us work together to fight ignorance and poverty and build a brighter future for the generations to come.
