BDU: The Faculty of Social Sciences at Bahir Dar University has a plan of launching African Studies Centre by 2014/2015.

The centre is meant to build an institution of cross-cutting interdisciplinary, multidisciplinary and cross-disciplinary issues pertaining to Africa.

During the event, the centre establishment proposal was presented by Dr. Dagmawie Mengistu, Assistant Professor of History in the Faculty of Social Sciences, Bahir Dar University.

Participants of the workshop were drawn from Government, Non-government and education institutions.

BDU:Ethiopia celebrated the first world fish migration day in mass rally in the streets of Bahir Dar Town. The theme of the celebration was “Protect the Unique Fish Species Flock of Lake Tana”.

The main objective of the celebration was to increase public awareness about the situation of fish of Lake Tana. A Television panel discussion organized by Amhara Mass Media Agency (AMMA) has been held on the occasion.

More than 500 people from various institutions, staff and students from Bahir Dar University participated on the event. The mass street rally was headed by Amhara Regional State Police Marsh Band.

At the end of the rally, there were presentations and discussions about the status and core threats of Lake Tana’s fish resources, especially focusing on the only endemic Labeobarbus species flock left in the world. BDU’s Vice Prsident for Academic Affairs, Dr. Firew Tegegne, has indicated that immediate coordination is needed among various institution.

Abay Basin Authority, Tana Sub-Basin Organization and Bureau of Environmental Protection, Land Administration and Use (BoEPLAU) shall take greater responsibility in the conservation and sustainable utilizations of the aquatic resources of Lake Tana. Universities, research institutions and other concerning organizations need to make Lake Tana their focus.

BDU:The Faculty of Educational and Behavioral Sciences at Bahir Dar University has recently held its 32nd Annual International Conference with the theme: “Education for All (EFA) Goals: Achievements, Challenges and Prospects in Ethiopia.”

The program began with an inspiring dramatized education-related song performed by group choir of Bahir Dar University’s cultural centre. The audience was deeply moved by the students’ performance.

A total of 32 research papers focusing on different contemporary topics related to the underlying theme were presented in three parallel sessions and lively discussions were made. Plenary sessions were also conducted.

Critical discussions and reflections were made on the third day, and general concluding remarks in relation to the conference has been made. In addition, direction for continuous future discourses and actions has been set.

Research shows that though there is improvement in gender parity across primary and secondary schools in Ethiopia, female students’ drop outs, repetition and inability to proceed to higher levels are still big challenges. School facilities are observed to be non gender sensitive.

Holistic approach to education sector, national commitment to transparency and accountability in education expenditure, good governance and sound monitoring and evaluation system have been recommended to realize Universal Primary Education (UPE) in Ethiopia.

In connection to EFA’s goal of Increasing Adult Literacy, research shows that adult literacy facilitators are found to be lacking proper training and payment.

Researches on universalizing primary education in Ethiopia, alternative basic education program, in which flexible programs were recommended, rural girl’s participation in education in East Gojjam, where cultural practices, early marriage, workload and rape are found to be affecting girl’s participations in education were presented and discussions were made.

Scattered and mobile nature of the community, poor utilization of alternative schooling, lack of suitable schools, slow construction of schools, lack of awareness and role model and many other factors that affect UPE in pastoralist areas.

Challenges like lack of support, commitment, incentives and understanding and weak collaboration of stakeholders have prevented school principals from implementing General Quality Education Improvement Program (GEQIP) in Ethiopia.

Research works on parent-school communications, early childhood care and education, internal efficiency vis-à-vis quality education in government and private schools of Addis Ababa were presented and discussed.

It has been pointed out in research on Education for All (EFA) that without clearly stipulated policy education, making education accessible might be pretty much challenging.

With regard to parents’ engagement in private schools in Addis Ababa, parents have not been given a space they deserve to have in school-parent partnership.

Papers on instructional leadership, inclusive education, and constructivist approach to teaching-learning process, female students in cooperative learning, students with disabilities and their access to education, child sexual abuse, re-conceptualizing instructional processes, geo-information system and equity to education in Amhara region have all been presented and discussed. Other papers dealt with included automatic promotion practices, educational policy reforms, instructional materials and inquiry learning.

Plenary sessions focusing particularly on the status of general education and EFA Goals in Ethiopia, international perspective to quality education for all, building a model of educational leadership for sustainability, UPE and educational policy review have been conducted and enlightening discussions were made.

In the end, general discussions and reflections were made. Critical lessons were drawn from the conference. Having conceptual clarity on policies, making policy dialogue, helping implementers have a clear understanding of the polices, avoiding silent exclusion in education, having varieties of policy options, maintaining effective link with Ministry of Education, engaging grassroots level stakeholders and critical needs assessments were recommended.

BDU:The Ethiopian Quality Award Organization (EQA) has awarded BahirDar University for its excellence in the quality of its t-learning, research and community services.

During this Third Quality Award Ceremony which took place on Saturday, 24 May, 2014 at the Sheraton Addis Hotel, the University has been honored with excellence for its outstanding performance and received a trophy from the President of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, his Excellency, Dr. Mulatu Teshome.

The university has been awarded the trophy for its excellence after passing a series of phases in the competition which involved the institutional self assessment based on the Self Assessment Manual sent from the Ethiopian Quality Award (EQA) organization, onsite visit and assessment of the university by the technical committee from the organization, EQA, and the final verdict by the 22 member jury from the organization, EQA.

In this competition for quality award, the core processes of Bahir Dar University- t-learning, research and community services as well as all support processes have been assessed with respect to several criteria which are classified into seven broad categories: Leadership, Process Management, Policy and Strategy, Resource Management, Customer Satisfaction/Focus, Organizational Performance and Impact on Society.

In this Third Ethiopian Quality Award competition, a total of 52 governmental and non-governmental institutions and/or organizations took part and 12 were honored with the prestigious excellence award and received trophies.

Expressing his utmost pleasure, the Board Chairperson of EQAO and the President of Addis Ababa University, Dr. Admasu Tsegaye, has communicated Bahir Dar University that the award ceremony will be held on May 25, 2014 at Sheraton Addis Hotel.

BDU:College of Business and Economics at Bahir Dar University has offered training on good governance and customers’ service satisfaction to a set of government employees drawn from different offices of Bahir Dar town.

BDU:The University’s Office of HIV/AIDS Prevention, Control and Coordination Directorate Director provided a capacity building training to the staff living with HIV.

“The objective of the training was to orient the targets take necessary care of their health and develop their understanding on reproductive health” the Director of HIV/AIDS Protection, Control and Coordination Directorate Office, Mrs. Marta Asmare.

Participants were drawn from different campuses of the university.

BDU: College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences has recently offered a training of trainees (ToT) on rural technology innovation and development to third year students.

The training was intended to help the trainees train their fellow students on how to apply their scientific knowledge in a way that could help them increase farmers’ productivity.

In order to solve farmers’ problems, the students were trained on how to link farmers’ experiential knowledge to scientific knowledge to help the farmers the best.

BDU:Science and technology have undoubtedly transformed the world in an unprecedented level. Guided by the light of innovation, humanity has witnessed the current age of science and technology.

This fact seems to have been recognized by Bahir Dar Institute of Technology (BiT) which has recently held its second international conference on the advancements of science and technology.

Different scholars and high-ranking government officials have participated in the conference; scientific papers were presented and plenary sessions were made. Various issues pertaining to the underlying theme have been discussed.

Based on the research conducted in connection to mobile users who have installed android applications, age and physical character specific exercises have been recommended.

Critical issues on adopting security solutions to mobile government (m-government) using cost-effective infrastructure have been dealt with.

It has been indicated that considering the new technique of fuzzy logic controller as an extension to the existing control method, not as their replacement, provides an extra set of tools which the control engineer has to learn how to use where it makes sense.

The Nile hydro-politics within the context of northeastern African geopolitics has been discussed.

Issues ranging from landscape intervention in the humid Ethiopian highlands, pollution in agricultural water shade and gully development processes in Ethiopian highland were entertained.

Solid emission on Lake Tana, biophysical and financial impacts of community-based gully rehabilitation, low flow assessment in the upper Blue Nile basin, estimation of ground water recharge in arid and semi-arid areas as well as soil and water conservation were among the major points discussed during the conference.

Health related issues in Ethiopian garment industry, Ethiopian airlines’ domestic flight sales forecasting, improving productivity in manufacturing companies and optimization of butterfly vale disc were also discussed.

Development and evaluation of low cost evaporation coolers, dimensioning and planning LTE radio networks, improved classification of algorithm for large dataset, measurement in optical fiber communications, large scale storage and future power grid and solar powered mobile medical clinics were dealt with.
