Background

The School of Veterinary Medicine (SVM) at Bahir Dar University is dedicated to advancing veterinary education, cutting-edge research, and community engagement. Building on more than a decade of development since its origins in 2013, the School has grown from offering a single BVSc program within the Department of Animal Production and Technology to becoming an independent academic unit in 2016 under the College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences. Today, SVM delivers three undergraduate programs (BVSc regular/extension and DVM) and three postgraduate specializations (Veterinary Microbiology, Public Health, and Epidemiology and Economics), fulfilling its mission to advance animal health and human well-being through education, discovery, and service.

The SVM aims to produce skilled, knowledgeable, and competent veterinary graduates, conduct strategic and demand-driven research, and deliver services that align with the university’s strategic objectives. The school is equipped with laboratories, animal farms, and a veterinary teaching clinic to support both educational and community engagement purposes. Its strategic location at Bahir Dar city, where farming communities are dwelling and several market-oriented livestock farms are emerging, makes SVM well-positioned for livestock and community health and veterinary education.
