The inaugural SVM-BDU Public Seminar Series was successfully launched

The School of Veterinary Medicine (SVM) at Bahir Dar University (BDU) proudly hosted the Inaugural Session of its Public Seminar Series, bringing together experts, academics, and students to discuss key issues in agriculture, livestock development, and environmental sustainability. The event featured two distinguished guest speakers who shared valuable insights and reflections on Ethiopia’s agricultural sector and innovative approaches to economic growth.

Dr. Tsedeke Abate, Senior Agricultural Scientist and Leader of the Homegrown Vision, delivered a presentation titled “Wax and Gold of Agricultural Research and Development (ARD) in Ethiopia: Personal Reflections.” He shared personal experiences and reflections on Ethiopia’s agricultural research and development landscape. He highlighted the dynamics of agricultural commodity trade, the evolving paradigm of ARD, and key issues such as goals, governance, priorities, accountability, and missed opportunities. His insights into national partnerships and systemic challenges offered both a critical and visionary outlook for the sector.

Dr. Workneh Ayalew, Senior Research Scientist and Program Coordinator at ICIPE, presented on “Commercial Insects for Job Creation, Economic Prosperity, and Environmental Health.” He emphasized the shift from a linear to a circular agricultural economy and the untapped potential of insect farming. His talk covered topics such as the use of black soldier fly larvae in animal feed, the nutritional benefits of edible insects, and their role in waste recycling and reducing greenhouse gases. He also highlighted how insect-based enterprises can create jobs, boost rural economies, and contribute to One Health initiatives.

Following the keynote presentations, the floor was opened for discussions, reflections, and collaborative dialogue. Participants engaged in meaningful conversations around research directions, policy implications, and the potential for future partnerships. The seminar was praised for its thought-provoking insights, inspirational messages, and practical solutions to pressing national challenges.

Finally, the Dean of the School of Veterinary Medicine, Dr. Yeshwas Ferede, expressed gratitude to the speakers and attendees, emphasizing the importance of such platforms for knowledge exchange and innovation.
