Bahir Dar University Forges Ahead in Innovation and Community Impact at 2nd Annual Workshop

Bahir Dar University, Ethiopia,( July 17, 2025) Bahir Dar University (BDU) proudly hosted its 2nd Annual Workshop on Community Engagement, University-Industry Linkage, Innovation, Startup Development, and Technology Transfer today, reinforcing its unwavering commitment to becoming a leading research institution deeply integrated with societal progress.

Organized by the Corporate Directorate for Community Engagement, University-Industry Linkage (UIL), and Technology Transfer, under the Office of the Vice President for Research and Community Engagement, this workshop served as a dynamic platform for fostering inclusive development and spotlighting BDU's dedication to practical, locally relevant research and groundbreaking innovation.

The workshop commenced with an inspiring opening address by Dr. Mengesha Ayene, President of BDU, who emphasized the university's significant advancements and resolute focus on community engagement, technology transfer, and startup development. Dr. Mengesha articulated BDU's Wisdom vision two: to be recognized as an autonomous, research-intensive institution that delivers tangible benefits to the community, and for Bahir Dar City to flourish as a vibrant startup hub.

A highlight of the event was the insightful keynote speech delivered by Professor Birhanu Belay, former Vice President for Community Service and Research at Jimma University and the inaugural President of Injibara University. Professor Birhanu offered invaluable perspectives on the landscape of community engagement practices in Ethiopia, expertly navigating both the challenges and abundant opportunities. He passionately urged BDU to prioritize community benefits, stressing the critical importance of demand-driven and community-initiated projects. Professor Birhanu also shared his current impactful work with ICARDA (International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas) in community-based bridging initiatives, further underscoring the real-world application of effective community engagement.

The one-day workshop brought together a diverse group of brilliant innovators and dedicated researchers, facilitating vibrant discussions and forging crucial collaborations.
