  • Name of the Degree to be Awarded: The degree is known as MASTER OF ARTS (MA) in International and Comparative Education in Amharic "የአርት ማሰተርስ ዲግሪ በዓለምአቀፍና ትምህርት ንፅፅር" 
  • Degree to be awarded by: Bahir Dar University, Subject to Senate Approval 
  • Standard Period of Study: 2 academic years (4 Semesters) for regular, 3 academic years for the summer, and 3 years for the extension programs 
  • Commencement of the Program: September, 2009 E.C. / 2016 
  • Fees/Charge: Government Sponsored and Self-sponsored (Private)

          Program objectives 


The Master Degree program in International and Comparative Education would enable graduates to:

  •  Compare world educational systems in terms of the social, cultural, economic and political situations that affect their development and transformation analyze educational policy, policy implementation as well as educational outcomes from International and comparative perspectives 
  • Develop the necessary skills and competencies for international understanding serve as instructors of International and Comparative Education in the departments of Education in Ethiopian universities and abroad 
  • conduct national, regional, and international educational research, evaluation and assessments for the advancement of pedagogical sciences contribute to the process of building the capacity of education personnel in the various governmental and non-governmental organizations widen the knowledge of the learners about the prevailing major national and international perspectives on education systems.

    Graduates of the Master Degree in International and Comparative Education would be able to serve as resource persons and experts who: 

  • Are capable of working as instructors and researchers in the fields of International and Comparative Education at institutions of higher learning 
  • Carry out international, regional and national analysis of the advances of education and represent their nation as educational experts and ambassadors 
  • Are capable of carrying out research activities on issues related to international and comparative education, basic education, literacy education, sustainable development, gender and education 
  • Have the abilities and skills needed to develop ways conducive
  •  promoting cooperation and solidarity with educational institutions both at national and international levels 
  • Have positive attitudes towards cultural diversity, equality of educational opportunities, and other civic virtues

           Graduate Profile 


After completing the MA program in ICE, graduates can lead to a variety of careers in the public and private sectors, from cultural training to educational policy and program development. Graduates typically seek jobs in consulting organizations: 

  • Demonstrate a basic knowledge of the principles of international and comparative education Be able to conduct comparative research undertakings in an international & national educational agendas, programs…, using the central concepts of international and comparative research 
  • Apply the principles of international and comparative education and concepts to comparative analysis of educational practices and policies 
  • Formulate a general understanding of the Ethiopia educational system, its characteristics and objectives Reflect on practical experiences, such as observation in Ethiopian schools and/or preschools, and compare the functioning of these institutions to similar entities in other countries
  • Describe current issues and trends in international and comparative education Demonstrate the analytic skills on how the social, political, and economic elements of education impact quality and outcomes. 
  • Become passionate and talented graduates who act as change agents for education at all levels Serve as a cadre of high-performing educational leaders and policy analysts for schools, universities and systems that are in need of significant change
  •  Influence policies and practices of internationalization in higher education Improve quality teaching and learning in schools and universities in Ethiopia and the region
