BDU Partnered with Esteemed Alumni and Distinguished Medicinal Chemist to establish NRDC

With its commitment to academic excellence and addressing societal needs, Bahir Dar university has initiated the establishment of a Nutraceutical Research and Development Center (NRDC) in association with esteemed alumni and distinguished medicinal chemist, Professor Tesfaye Biftu. The center will be dedicated to advancing scientific knowledge in the field of food-based therapeutic research and promoting the utilization of food as medicine. In relation to these, it will explore and validate the wealth of Ethiopian traditional food heritage which would contribute to the development of evidence-based dietary interventions and personalized nutrition approaches that address the specific health challenges prevalent in Ethiopia and beyond. Among others, It has intended to establish a dedicated facility for NRDC; conduct cutting-edge research in nutraceuticals; facilitate technology transfer and licensing agreements to commercialize research outputs and foster entrepreneurship in the nutraceutical sector; establish partnerships with international institutions to facilitate staff and student exchange programs; run policy advocacy on nutraceutical products etc. Some of its thematic areas are functional foods development; nutritional intervention for chronic diseases; dietary interventions for aging and age-related diseases; gut microbiota and nutritional therapy; nutritional immunology; personalized nutrition; nutritional education and behavior change etc The details of NRDC proposal is found on page 11 of EPPAD bulletin link below,  https://www.eppad.org/images/september2024.pdf
