About Faculty of Social Sciences

The Faculty of Social Sciences at Bahir Dar University was established in 2008 to promote interdisciplinary collaboration, academic excellence, and societal impact. As one of the university's key academic units, the faculty is dedicated to advancing knowledge through quality teaching, innovative research, and meaningful community engagement. The faculty comprises six departments: Political Science and International Studies, Geography and Environmental Studies, History and Heritage Management, Social Anthropology, Social Work, and Gender and Development Studies. Through these departments, the faculty offers a diverse range of undergraduate and postgraduate programs designed to address contemporary social, political, cultural, and environmental challenges.  With a strong commitment to academic excellence, the faculty nurtures critical thinking, creativity, and professional competence among its students. It actively promotes interdisciplinary research, supports evidence-based policy development, and contributes to sustainable development through community-centered initiatives. Guided by the values of integrity, inclusiveness, excellence, social responsibility, and the pursuit of wisdom, the Faculty strives to be a leading center of social science education and research in Ethiopia and Eastern Africa.

Faculty of Social Sciences Successfully Conducts 13th International Social Sciences Annual Conference

The Faculty of Social Sciences (FSS) at Bahir Dar University successfully conducted its 13th International Social Sciences Annual Conference from June 5–6, 2026, in collaboration with ReDSS, UNDP, Plan International, and DPFSCC. Held under the theme “Conflict, Social Crisis, and the Pursuit of Peaceful Transformation in Ethiopia: Gender, Displacement and Community Resilience,” the conference brought together academics, development partners, government representatives, and civil society organizations. The two-day event combined academic research presentations with policy dialogue on conflict, displacement, community resilience, peacebuilding, and durable solutions. Through keynote addresses, research presentations, stakeholder reports, and panel discussions, participants explored practical strategies for addressing Ethiopia’s humanitarian and social challenges. The faculty extends its appreciation to all partners and participants for contributing to the success of the conference.

The Faculty of Social Science invites academics, researchers, students, policymakers, and development practitioners to participate in the 13th International Social Science Conference, which will be held on June 5–6, 2026, at Peda Auditorium. Faculty of Social Sciences Researcher Publishes New Book on Africa’s Quest for United Nations Security Council Reform

The Faculty of Social Sciences is pleased to announce the publication of a new book by Dr. Nigusie Mandefro, exploring Africa’s pursuit of reform within the United Nations Security Council. Published by Palgrave Macmillan, the book provides a critical analysis of Africa’s position in global governance and the challenges surrounding Security Council reform.

The faculty promotes innovative and evidence-based research in areas such as governance, social transformation, population studies, climate change, food security, gender, cultural studies, and community development. Through collaborative partnerships, publications, conferences, and community-based projects, the faculty generates knowledge that informs policy, strengthens institutions, and improves the well-being of society. Community Sevice, Thematic Area

Participating in environmental management and environmental awareness creation for the local community. Capacity-building training on basic cartographic techniques, GIS, and map reading. Training on social problems (gender issues, child trafficking, child abuse, and neglect) and gender mainstreaming. Training on human rights, corruption, good governance, elections, democratic principles and values, professional and public service ethics, citizenship, federalism, tourism and heritage, and archives and recording.
