Reforming Ethiopia’s Tax and Tort Laws

A national conference on Reforming Ethiopia’s Tax and Tort Laws held

Bahir Dar University conducted National research conference in collaboration with USAID Justice Activity on the theme: Reforming Ethiopia’s Tax and Tort Laws that focuses on different researches conducted on the Ethiopian tax system and tort Laws on August 31/ 2022. 

The research conference is conducted with the objective of generating evidence-based input for the law reform process.This conference is part of BDU Law School and USAID Justice (Feteh) Activity collaborative efforts to provide evidence-based input for the law-making organ to implement informed Tax and Tort law reform. In this one-day Conference, seven research papers that focus on tax and tort law reform were presented.  The papers touches issues related to income tax, property tax, tax dispute resolution, tax enforcement mechanism and institutional framework, and the adequacy and sufficiency of Ethiopian tort law. It is strongly believed that the papers will trigger discussions and serve as valuable input for the tort and tax law reform process. The conference brought together a number of key actors not only from academia but also from lawmakers, law enforcement organs, the judiciary, the private sector and civil society.

The papers presented entailed constructive discussions that enable the researchers to get valuable input to be able to upgrade their research works. The majority of the participants from different government organs and the private sector affirm the timeliness of the conference and they also expressed their belief that the findings of the research works will contribute immensely to the law reform process.
