Department of Chemistry holds PhD Curriculum review

A curriculum review workshop was held for newly opened third degree programs at Bahir Dar University Science College

Department of Chemistry at Bahir Dar University held PhD curriculum review on three programs (Organic, Inorganic and Physical Chemistry) it is preparing to open in the current academic calendar. The review was made by a few of the most experienced and knowledgeable professors in country.

Speaking at the curriculum evaluation, Dr. Getnet Tamru, academic V/Dean of the College of Science of Bahir Dar University, expressed the very importance of opening the programs. Considering the trained manpower in the department, there were pressures both from the university and the college to opening these programs previously. However, the V/Dean added, due to the high-capacity laboratory equipment and chemicals demand to properly run the programs, the opening of these programs has been delayed to date. Thanking all members of the department and university officials who played their part in the opening of the programs, Dr. Getnet, stated that the opening of these programs will contribute in many ways to solve the problems in the country and produce trained professionals.

Dr Andargachew Moges, Executive Director for General Quality Assurance of the university on occasion said that as Bahir Dar University is one of the eight research universities in the country, in addition to doing researches that can solve the problems of the region and the country, it is appropriate to increase the number of postgraduate programs and make them accessible in order to produce skilled manpower in all fields. He added, in the future, it is appropriate not only to open new programs, but also to monitor their quality in light of their benefits.

The curriculum review was made by the following professors from different universities. 1. Prof. Berhanu Abegaz, Professor of Organic Chemistry, Addis Ababa University, University of Botswana, African Academy of Sciences 2. Prof. Shimelis Admassie, Professor of Physical Chemistry, Addis Ababa University 3. Prof. Madhu Thomas, Professor of Inorganic Chemistry, Addis Ababa University Science and Technology 4. Prof. Sisay Tadesse, Professor of Physical Chemistry, Hawassa University 5. Prof. Legesse Adane, Professor of Organic Chemistry, Hawassa University 6. Dr. Tegene Desalegn, Associate Professor of Inorganic Chemistry, Adama Science and Technology University

In the review workshop which was facilitated by the department head Dr Belete Assefa, several university professors, invited guests and graduate program students participated.
