PROJECTS
GeneticCharacterizationofTef[Eragrostistef(Zucc.)Trotter]GenotypesUsingSSRMarkersand PhenotypicTraits
[ 30/06/2017 – 18/11/2018 ]
Genetic diversity of more than 100 tef accessions, improved varieties, and wild relatives were studied using 19 microsatellite markers and over 20 morphological traits.
Results include:
1. Duplicates of the accessions at the Ethiopian Biodiversity Institute were screened
2. Accessions of tef that performed better than the improved varieties in lodging resistance, yield, and yield-related traits were identified
3. It was found that there is high genetic variability with unstructured genetic patterns among the studied tef geno types which imply the
the vitality of conserved tef germplasms at the Ethiopian Biodiversity Institute and the impact of the seed exchange system on tef breeding activities in Ethiopia.
4. Two papers, one published and the other under review, were produced.

Screening tef mutant populations for root architecture
[ 01/01/2022 – 25/10/2022]
Over 3600 tef mutant lines produced by Ethylmethylenesulphonate(EMS) and Tsedey in their background were grown in a transparent pot and managed for their roots. Then the root images were analyzed for their seminal
root angles using ImageJ software and the RESULTS include
1. Wide ranges of seminal root angles(15_105)were observed
2. Best mutant lines which might have better resistance to lodging were selected based on rootangle
3. The high variety of lines with regard to root angle testified that there is a chance of developing better lodgingandmoisturestress-
resistant varieties from the examined mutant lines.
4. one publishable article is under review.
