About the Department

Brief Overview to the Department

The Dept. of Animal Production & Technology was established at Bahir Dar University in 2005. Since inception, the Dept. has been actively engaged in training of students in Animal Production & Technology, and developed research collaborations with national & international organizations. Many of its alumni are serving in Government/NGO at regional/national levels. The Department currently offers 1 UG programs namely: B.Sc. Degree (Animal Production & Technology), and 6 PG programs (4 M.Sc. & 2 PhD) namely: M.Sc. Degree (Animal Production), M.Sc. (Animal  Genetics & Breeding), M.Sc. (Apiculture), M.Sc. (Feeds & Animal Nutrition), PhD (Animal Genetics & Breeding) and PhD (Animal Nutrition) These programs are administered under Animal Production & Technology department and offered in regular mode as well as to summer students under the Course Chair System.

With its relocation to the Zenzelma campus, the Dept. is strategically placed amongst a peri-urban farming community that enables effective community out-reach. Animal farms and laboratories that support teaching, as well as other infrastructural resources offers advantages for future development.

Objectives

To produce knowledgeable and competent professionals who will contribute significantly towards the, economic, social and technological needs of the nation & beyond.

To produce middle and high level skilled Animal scientists who will be able to conduct demand driven research and development activities in the area of Animal sciences and disseminating research results through well coordinated extension program.

To play a key role in the social, economic, and technological development of the nation, by providing high quality education in animal production and technology. By adopting modern modalities of t-learning such as problem based and experiential learning, prepare knowledgeable competent and conscientious graduates who are sensitive to the needs of the nation by setting high standards in all academic activities. Challenge students in the path of practical approach & intellectual pursuit. Maintain a working environment that is conducive to learning & research for students and staff.
