Background

 

The Department of Veterinary Epidemiology and Public Health operates as part of the School of Veterinary Medicine at Bahir Dar University. Established in alignment with the school’s commitment to advancing veterinary education, research, and community engagement, the department plays a pivotal role in improving both animal and human health.

The department specializes in epidemiological modeling, disease surveillance and outbreak investigation, risk analysis and disease prevention, food safety, zoonotic diseases, and One Health approaches to address critical public health challenges. By integrating veterinary sciences with public health principles, it strengthens disease prevention and control strategies for emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases in Ethiopia.

With a strong emphasis on research, teaching, and community engagement, the department aims to produce highly skilled professionals capable of contributing to policy development, disease prevention, and sustainable public health risk management. Additionally, it actively fosters collaborations with various institutions to develop evidence-based solutions for zoonotic disease control, antimicrobial resistance (AMR) management, and food safety improvements.
