Overview

The School of Veterinary Medicine (SVM) at Bahir Dar University was established on November 7, 2024 to enhance veterinary education, research and community engagement. The foundation of the School build upon more than a decade of veterinary training, which began in 22013 with the launch of the Bachelor of Veterinary Science (BVSc) program within the Department of Animal Production and Technology. Recognizing the growing need for advanced veterinary education, the Department of Veterinary Science was established in 2016 under the College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences (CAES). Since then, the department has been offering three undergraduate programs (BVSc, both regular and extension, and DVM) along with 3 postgraduate programs (MSc in Veterinary Public Health, Veterinary Microbiology, and Veterinary Epidemiology & Economics).

The SVM aims to produce skilled, knowledgeable, and competent veterinary graduates, conduct strategic and demand-driven research, and deliver services that align with the university’s strategic objectives. The school is equipped with laboratories, animal farms, and veterinary teaching clinic to support both educational and community engagement purposes. Its strategic location at Bahir Dar city where farming communities are dwelling and several market-oriented livestock farms are emerging, makes SVM well-positioned for livestock and community health and veterinary education.
