BDU Celebrates Second Cohort of Transformative Program, Reinforcing Commitment to Africa’s Leadership Renaissance
BDU, Bahir Dar | March 15, 2025— Bahir Dar University (BDU) marked a milestone in its mission to advance ethical and effective leadership across Africa today, as the College of Medicine and Health Sciences (CMHS) honored the graduation of the second cohort of its pioneering Leadership Development Fellows Program. The ceremony, attended by government officials, academic leaders, and healthcare sector stakeholders, also heralded the official launch of the Nile Executive Leadership Academy (NELA), a bold expansion of BDU’s strategy to cultivate visionary leaders capable of driving institutional and societal transformation.
Presided over by BDU President Dr. Mengesha Ayene, the event underscored leadership as both a critical challenge and a catalytic solution for Africa’s evolving institutional landscape. In his keynote address, Dr. Mengesha declared, “Leadership gaps lie at the root of systemic failures, but today, we plant seeds of renewal. The Nile Executive Leadership Academy will amplify our capacity to nurture leaders who combine strategic rigor with moral clarity.”
The graduation ceremony drew praise from high-profile partners, including Mr. Abdulkerim Mengistu, Head of the Amhara Regional Health Bureau, who emphasized the urgency of investing in leadership: “Policies alone cannot heal systems—inspired leaders can. These graduates exemplify the competence and character needed to revitalize Ethiopia’s healthcare sector.”
Announced as a flagship initiative under BDU’s 2030 Strategic Vision, the Nile Executive Leadership Academy formalizes the university’s role as a continental hub for leadership innovation. NELA will integrate indigenous African leadership philosophies with global best practices, offering advanced training in systems thinking, organizational transformation, and ethical governance. Dr. Bekalu Wubshet, Chief Executive Director of CMHS, affirmed, “NELA is not just an academy—it is a movement. We are bridging the gap between theory and practice to equip leaders for Africa’s unique challenges.”
The program’s impact has garnered acclaim at the highest levels. Mr. Asegid Samuel, Director of Human Resource Development and Delegate of state minister at Ethiopia’s Federal Ministry of Health, praised BDU’s proactive approach “This initiative is a national asset. By prioritizing leadership excellence, BDU is shaping professionals who will transform service delivery and policy implementation.” Dr. Solomon Worku, Special Advisor to the Minister of Health, added, “Leadership today demands cultural rootedness and global awareness BDU’s model sets a precedent for the continent.”
The 2025 cohort, now joining a growing network of BDU-trained leaders, received a charge to leverage their training in fostering resilient institutions. Their curriculum, spanning strategic execution, stakeholder engagement, and adaptive governance, positions them to address complex challenges in healthcare, education, and public administration.
As Ethiopia and the broader East Africa region confront dynamic socio-economic demands, Bahir Dar University continues to solidify its reputation as an engine of leadership innovation. The establishment of NELA aligns with BDU’s vision to be ranked among Africa’s top institutions for transformative education by 2030.
“Today is not an endpoint, but a launchpad,” concluded Dr. Mengesha. “With the Nile Executive Leadership Academy, Bahir Dar University reaffirms its pledge: to develop leaders who do not merely adapt to change they define it.”
