The 4th Annual National Research conference Started

The 4th Annual Research conference with a theme “Agriculture and environmental management for sustainable development” organized by College of Agriculture and Environmental Science is being held at BDU. The conference was opened today in the morning and will continue until tomorrow.
While making welcoming speech, Dr. Desalegn Molla, Dean of College of Agriculture and Environmental Science, has made a brief explanation about the college and the works that it has been undertaking to become a center of excellence in agriculture and environmental studies. He also appreciated the organizers of the conference and extends his Sincere thanks to different sponsoring institutions who made the conference a reality. In her opening speech, Dr. Mulunesh Abebe, BDU’s Vice President for Research and Community Service, has said that agriculture is the main source of livelihood in different parts of the world including Ethiopia. She said the sector is dependent upon environment and that it is not uncommon to see the negative repercussions of traditional agricultural practices on environment. In addition, Dr. Mulunesh noted that environment and agricultural practices should be balanced so as to bring sustainable development and the conference would be a great opportunity to discuss and come up with ideas on how to strike the balance between the two. Dr. Getie Zeleke, Director of Water and Land Resource Center at Addis Ababa University, in his key note speech said that efforts have been made since the 1975 famine in order to conserve and protect the environment along side with agricultural activities so that they could go harmoniously. However, the sustainability of those efforts has not been satisfactory, and he recommended that these efforts should be done with full ownership from local citizens and they should also be backed by environmental and agricultural experts as well as by the government.
