Bahir Dar University (BDU) and the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) have further strengthened their partnership through the signing of a new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at advancing collaboration in capacity building, evidence generation, and policy influence.

The agreement was signed by Dr. Mengesha Ayene, President of Bahir Dar University, and H.E. Saifeldin Nemir, Chief of UNICEF's Field Office in the Amhara Region, during a ceremony held at Bahir Dar University.

Presenting the contents of the MoU, Prof. Netsanet Fantahun, Corporate Director for Research Affairs, highlighted the significant achievements already realized through the partnership between the two institutions. These include collaborative efforts in evidence generation, the establishment of the Social and Behavioral Change (SBC) Hub, the development of key SBC working documents, and a range of capacity-building initiatives that have contributed to child-centered development interventions in the region.

The newly signed MoU provides a comprehensive framework for expanding cooperation in areas related to child rights, maternal and child health, nutrition, education, social and behavioral change, youth engagement, social protection, emergency response, research, innovation, and community development. It also opens new opportunities for joint research projects, policy engagement, professional exchanges, student internships, curriculum development, and national evaluation capacity development.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Dr. Mengesha Ayene emphasized the importance of translating academic knowledge into tangible societal impact.

"This partnership reflects Bahir Dar University's commitment to putting knowledge into action. By strengthening our collaboration with UNICEF, we will continue generating evidence, building capacities, and contributing to policies that create meaningful and lasting improvements in the lives of children, youth, and communities. The signing of this MoU marks not only the continuation of a successful partnership but also the beginning of new opportunities for innovation, research, and social impact," he stated.

H.E. Saifeldin Nemir underscored the value of the partnership in advancing UNICEF's mission and strengthening evidence-based interventions.

"UNICEF highly values its partnership with Bahir Dar University. The University's academic excellence, research capacity, and commitment to community engagement make it a key partner in generating evidence and strengthening systems that improve outcomes for children and families. By combining UNICEF's development expertise with Bahir Dar University's academic and research strengths, we can create sustainable solutions that inform policy, strengthen institutions, and accelerate progress for children and young people," he noted.

Both leaders further expressed their commitment to joining hands in pursuing shared priorities beyond the specific areas outlined in the agreement, reaffirming their dedication to expanding cooperation in response to emerging development needs and opportunities.

The partnership reflects the shared vision of Bahir Dar University and UNICEF to generate evidence-based solutions, strengthen institutional and human resource capacities, and influence policies that improve the well-being of children, youth, and communities in Ethiopia.

The MoU will serve as a platform for advancing impactful research, innovation, and development initiatives across the Amhara Region and beyond.
