The Institute of Land Administration in Bahir Dar University was established in 2006 by launching the first BSc program in Land Administration in Ethiopia. The establishment of the institute was initiated by the then Environmental Protection, Land Administration and Use Authority (EPLAUA) of the Amhara National Regional State. Institute’s establishment was supported by Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), Sweden and financed by the Swedish government through Sida. Since its establishment ILA has been providing the most valuable training in the country focusing on the different dimensions of land such as land tenure management, property law, property valuation, land use and development, GIS, cadastral surveying and mapping, urban design and planning, and so on.
Currently the institute is running three under graduate programs and three MSc programs and one PhD program in Land policy and governance tailored to land sector and planned to open 2 additional post graduate programs. The undergraduate programs are BSc in land administration and surveying, BSc in Architecture and BSc in Land and Property valuation. In addition to the BSc programs, ILA has started to offer MSc program in Land administration and management, MSc in Real Property Valuation, MA in Property Law and PhD in Land Policy and Governance. The PhD training in land policy and governance supported by DAAD (German Academic Exchange Program) and financed by GIZ/AU as part of strengthening land governance capacity in Africa has been lunched in Sept 2016. The institute has about 60 academic staffs and of which 8 are Assistant Professor and above having a PhD degree and the remaining are lecturers and Assistant lecturers. Out of which 12 are doing their PhD in Ethiopia and abroad. Moreover, the institute is equipped with modern GIS and remote sensing, photogrammetry and modern surveying equipments required for practical teaching, research and community service.
In addition to the regular teaching learning activities, ILA is closely working with the federal and regional states and has been providing different short and long term trainings to the experts in the land sector. ILA has also been conducting short term and long term training and researches on critical land sector problems in collaboration with national and international partners. So as to extend the international collaboration and partnerships ILA has initiated the establishment of the East African Land Administration Network (EALAN) at sub-continental level. The members of EALAN are 12 academic and research institutions/universities in Eastern Africa. ILA is also the founding member and secretariat of ETHIOLANDNET. ETHIOLANDNET is national network of academic and research institutes working on land. The purpose of these two networks is to create a platform of collaboration and working together. ILA has initiated the establishment of the Ethiopian Land Administration professionals’ association.
