Strengthening collaboration of Disaster Risk Management capacity between Bahir Dar University, Institute of Disaster Risk Management and Food Security Studies (BDU-IDRMFSS), University of Hargeisa (UOH) and Somali Land National Disaster Risk Management and Food Reserve Authority (NADFOR)

 

 

On February 14, 2022, representatives from UOH and BDU_IDRMFSS have visited Somali land NADFOR head office and conduct meeting at NADFOR chairman office with his senior management team members (Director of Disaster preparedness and Early Warning, Director of Planning and Research, Director of Admin and Finance, Director of Coordination) (Figure 1).

 

The meeting agenda were;

 

1. Introduction of NADFOR chairs, Directors and other scholars with Representatives of UOH and Bahir Dar universities- institute of disaster Risk management and food security studies.

2. Sharing up-to-date information, experience and achievements in DRM activities, policy and strategies in Horn of Africa in general and in mainly focus on Somaliland and Ethiopia DRM operational systems, education and research.

3. Exploring possible future collaboration and coordination between Somaliland National Disaster preparedness and Food reserve Authority and higher institutions (UOH and BDU_IDRMFSS)  .

 

 During the discussion, Somali land NADFOR head office chairman and his senior management team has briefed the NADFOR up-to-date operation systems and prospective, challenges and opportunities of possible collaboration in the region. Dr. Adane Tesfaye, Dean of IDRMFSS from Bahir Dar University also briefed the Collaboration Work of Ethiopian National Disaster Risk Management Commission, BDU- IDRMFSS collaboration works, DRM Education and Research prospects in Ethiopia and Joint Regional program initiatives of DRM capacity building in the horn of Africa (Figure 2). 

 

After thorough discussion between the participants, the participants agreed to strengthen the possible collaborations of NADFOR, UOH and BDU-IDRMFSS as indicated below;

     DRM Research project development and Capacity building

 DRM education capacity building both in short term and long term

Explore possible DRM Scholarship for DRM  experts capacity building

 Stainability of the existing Joint Regional Master Program in Disaster Risk Management and Food System     Resilience

 Development of Regional Collaborative projects
