Grant Writing Workshop, September 3 - 4, 2021 “Master the techniques of writing winning proposals”

The Alliance for Research, Innovation, and Education (AfRIE, https://afrie.org/), is organizing a virtual grant writing workshop on September 3 and 4, 2021, from 4pm to 7pm Ethiopian Time (09am to 12pm EDT). The overall objective of the workshop is to strengthen the research capabilities of Universities in Ethiopia through securing grant funding and mentorship programs. The workshop will cover basic topics on how to develop a fundable idea and the fundamentals of grant writing. After the workshop, selected participants will have the opportunity to develop an actual grant proposal with the help of mentors.

Having attended this workshop, participants will be able to:

1. Navigate the world of grant application: concept, context, and presentation.

2. Research and identify potential funding sources.

3. Understand funding guidelines for writing winning proposals.

4. Understand the review process.

5. Develop focused and realistic budget.

6. Demonstrate the merits, excellence, and innovation of project ideas.

7. Package professional grant submissions for various agencies.

8. Navigate the importance of establishing institutional grant management office.

9. Assemble a winning research team. 10. Navigate institutional support.

Target audience: This workshop will address both practical and conceptual aspects of the proposal-writing process. It is designed for: ▪ The workshop is geared towards those who wish to strengthen their grant writing skills, as well as beginners who wish to acquire and master the techniques of preparing and writing winning proposals to various funding agencies. Faculty, clinicians, scientists and technologists interested to prepare a competitive extramural research grant proposal are invited to apply. ▪ Training the trainers is a cornerstone of AfRIE's support to Ethiopian academic institutions. Mid- and senior-level faculty who can mentor junior faculty will be given priority. ▪ Emphasis will be given to the development of ideas, identification of the most appropriate funding agency, tips and strategies in preparing the proposal and how to write a letter to reviewers. The focus will be on how to develop effective proposals in times of fierce competition and limited resources. Applicants who develop proposals will learn how to organize the document in a logical, convincing manner. ▪ The workshop will begin and end on time. Attendees should plan to login 10 minutes early to get the full benefit of the workshop.
