Data Sciences and Big Data Analytics Department

Data science is a booming field that studies data and how to extract meaning from it. The focus of data science is extracting meaningful information from data. That knowledge then gets applied to business, government, and other bodies to help drive profits, innovate products and services, build better infrastructure and public systems, and more. Hence, it is receiving increased attention in a variety of geo-information science disciplines and applications. Data science and Big data are related but distinct concepts. Data science refers to the scientific approach and field of study that applies a series of methods, algorithms, mathematics, statistics and tools to process and extract insights from structured and unstructured data. Big data refers to the technologies and methods for managing and analyzing large and complex data sets. Data science uses algorithms and machine learning to train computers to make decisions on big data. Big data is mainly used for business and customer satisfaction purposes, while data science is mainly used for scientific purposes. However, both big data and data science have applications in various domains and sectors, and meet a number of important emerging technology and economic development challenges.
To address that need, this department focuses on:
Web development
Data Engineering
Big Data Analysis
Data Exploration and Visualization
