Biography/Profile Summary

Degnet Teferi is an Assistant Professor and Researcher in the Department of Human Nutrition at Bahir Dar Institute of Technology, Bahir Dar University. He teaches a range of nutrition-related courses at both undergraduate and graduate levels for students in nutrition, agriculture, and food technology programs. His research focuses on diverse areas of nutrition, including infant and young child feeding, nutritional treatment and management, food and nutrition labeling, food blending and nutritional evaluation, fermentation processes, and the bioavailability of micronutrients. He also has a strong interest in the intersection of food systems, agriculture, and nutrition, with a particular emphasis on advancing sustainable and nutrition-sensitive development approaches. In addition to his academic and research roles, Degnet serves as a consultant and trainer for various nutrition-related programs and projects, contributing technical expertise in program design, implementation, capacity building, and evaluation. He actively collaborates with governmental and non-governmental organizations to promote evidence-based nutrition interventions and policies. Degnet is a member of several professional associations and serves on several technical advisory committees, where he contributes to advancing nutrition science, education, and practice at the regional and national levels.

Projects and Consultancy Participation (selected)

  • Secured a grant from the ANH Academy Curriculum Enrichment Training of Trainers (ToT) Small Grants Programme and trained academic staff on multidisciplinary and threshold concepts, followed by mentoring and monitoring support to facilitate the integration of these concepts into selected courses within the existing curriculum (2025/26). 
  • Co-led the development of the Amhara region Food Systems Profile and guideline for food systems development at sub-national levels in Ethiopia: organized by the Alliance for Biodiversity and CIAT, EPHI, and FoNSE (2025).
  • Led the nutritious and safe food outcome for the Resilient Agriculture for Inclusive and Sustainable Ethiopian Food System (RAISE- FS) project of the SWR Ethiopia (2022- 2026).
  • Successfully coordinated the Bahir Dar University team working for the BRIDGE project of Wageningen University and Research (WUR) (2020- 2022).
  • Coordinated  an assessment on “farming systems and nutrition tracking”, organized by the International Crops Research Institute for Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT-Ethiopia) (March, 2021)
  • Led the nutrition outcome for the impact evaluation of the Appropriate Scale mechanization Consortium (ASMC) project of the Amhara cluster, Ethiopia (May- October, 2020).
  • Led and successfully coordinated the field data collection and reporting for the evaluation of the impact of CARE Ethiopia’s Nutrition at the Center (N@C) project implemented in selected districts of South Gondar Zone, Northwest Ethiopia (2018/19).
