Background
Bahir Dar Energy Center (BEC), established within Bahir Dar Institute of Technology (BiT), Bahir Dar University (BDU), has evolved into an interdisciplinary platform for sustainable energy research, postgraduate education, innovation, and technology development. Its development reflects BDU’s continued effort to integrate academic training with applied research and practical solutions to Ethiopia’s energy challenges.
The Center originated from the collaborative graduate program established in 2009 and subsequently evolved through several institutional arrangements, including its designation as a Center of Excellence in Sustainable Energy in 2011 and an Energy Research Institute in 2013. In 2014, BEC integrated the graduate program and research functions. This integrated structure has enabled more effective use of academic expertise, laboratories, postgraduate researchers, and external partnerships while reducing institutional fragmentation and duplication.
BEC currently combines postgraduate education with five multidisciplinary research themes that serve as the principal platforms for research, innovation, technology development, and collaboration:
- Solar Energy Research – focusing on solar thermal, solar photovoltaic, and related renewable-energy applications.
- Bioenergy Research – addressing biomass resources, bioenergy conversion technologies, biofuel, biogas, and other bio-based energy solutions.
- Efficient Cooking and Lighting – developing and evaluating improved cook stoves, biomass, lighting, and household energy technologies, with emphasis on efficiency, safety, affordability, and user needs.
- Advanced Energy Storage and Conversion – addressing energy storage, conversion technologies, and their integration into sustainable energy systems. Particularly, batteries, super capacitor and Fuel cell coupled with hydrogen production and storage.
- Wind and Mini/Micro-Hydropower Research – focusing on decentralized renewable power systems, resource assessment, technology development, and applications for underserved communities.
The five themes provide a framework for bringing together researchers from different engineering and scientific disciplines around common energy challenges. They also connect postgraduate research with proposal development, technology innovation, field validation, partnerships, technology transfer, and community engagement. The Center’s membership includes researchers from BDU and other Ethiopian and international institutions, creating a broad base for collaborative research and capacity development.
BEC has established a substantial academic and research record. The integrated structure has supported the graduation of more than 110 MSc and 9 PhD students, produced more than 200 publications, facilitated multidisciplinary supervision, and enabled the development of advanced laboratories through university resources, competitive grants, and development-partner support. Its activities have also expanded into professional training, consultancy, community engagement, and applied technology development.
With its multidisciplinary expertise, postgraduate research base, laboratory infrastructure, and growing national and international partnerships, BEC provides a strong institutional foundation for applied energy research and field-based technology evaluation. Its research chairs offer an established mechanism for organizing expertise around priority energy technologies while connecting research outcomes with practical applications and community needs.
