Celebrating GIS Day 2024 on November 23rd with the theme “Mapping Minds, Shaping the World.”

 

Bahir Dar University's Geospatial Data & Technology Center (GDTC) celebrated GIS Day 2024 on November 23rd with the theme “Mapping Minds, Shaping the World.” The event gathered researchers, students, and industry experts to discuss advancements in Geographic Information Systems (GIS).


Dr. Daniel Ayalew and Dr. Tesfaye Melak opened the event, emphasizing GIS's role in addressing global challenges and promoting sustainable development. Keynote speaker Dr. Daniel Kassahun, an Associate Professor of Remote Sensing and GIS at Austin College, Texas, highlighted GIS's transformative power. Dr. Getachew Workneh, an Assistant Professor of Geoinformatics at Paris-Lodron-University of Salzburg, showcased the integration of AI with GIS (GeoAI).


Presentations covered GIS's historical milestones and applications in agriculture and environmental science. Researchers Dr. Biniam Sisheber and Tegegn Molla discussed using GIS for crop yield estimation and ecosystem service management. and closing remarks by Mr. Birhanu Gedif.
