DRMSD installed solar cell panel at Ebnat Woreda

New Picture 2Department of Disaster Risk Management & Sustainable Development, College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences, Bahir Dar University,  launched its ever first solar cell panel at Worgaja Elementary School, Ebinat woreda as part of the project "Promoting resilience of rural communities in Ethiopia through climate change science and technology", implemented through the collaboration of Bahir Dar University and Universitat Jaume I (Spain). The project was initiated to support the ‘School Safety and Climate Change Adaptation Training program’ facilitated by Bahir Dar University in collaboration with Plan international Ethiopia (Amhara Program Unit).

According to the training program coordinator, Ato Misganaw Teshager, the solar panel installed in Worgaja rural kebele benefits the rural school not only in terms of powering the radio educational program but also in helping students to study during night time. “As one of the outgoing departments in the university, we are in our element when we have to make this announcement off that we launched a solar cell plant at Ebinat Woreda, Worigaja Elementary School. We will keep you posted on anything else which we are doing under DRMSD-CAES”. He also noted the role of cooperation between universities and departments within universities in the provision of appropriate community services. He thanked University of Jaume I (Spain) for covering the cost of the photovoltaic materials and preparation of instructional manual; Plan international Ethiopia (Amhara Program Unit) for coordinating and linking our effort to their existing project; and experts of BDU Energy center for doing all the installations and unreserved technical support; and finally he thank Ato Tesfahun Asmamaw and Dr. Belayneh Ayele for their enthusiastic coordination of the BDU-UJI photovoltaic project.

National conference on “Free Grazing in Ethiopia: Challenges and Opportunities”

The College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences of Bahir Dar University in collaboration with partner institutions organizes a national conference on “Free Grazing in Ethiopia: Challenges and Opportunities” that will be held at the campus of the college from June 12 -13, 2014. Hence, we invite all interested researchers to submit abstract of their scientific papers to the organizing committee. The abstract should contain the title, contact address/affiliations that includes the objectives, methodology, findings, major conclusions and recommendations that should not exceed 300 words. CAES-BDU HOSTS THE 2014 JOINT ANNUAL RESEARCH REVIEW CONFERENCE

Review CCollege of Agriculture & Environmental Sciences host the 2014 joint annual research review conference held between the 27th and 31st January involving three universities and four research centers found in Western Amhara. The research review took place for five days at CAES- Zenzelima Campus under five key research thematic areas: Crop; Livestock and Fishery; Natural Resources; Agricultural Mechanization and Food Science as well as Agricultural Technology Transfer, Rural Development, and Socioeconomic research thematic areas. According to conference coordinator, Dr. Melkamu Alemayehu, organizing such a joint annual research review is one of the main role of Western Amhara Operational Platform established with the aim of encouraging interdisciplinary and integrated research focusing on problems which have national development priority to avoid duplication of efforts and resources.
