Background

Geology is a newly established academic program at Bahir Dar University under the College of Science. Since 2016, it has been upgraded to the School of Earth Sciences (SES). The demand for geology graduates and professionals is high. This demand is expected to increase due to their role in various development sectors.

In addition to the undergraduate program, SES offers four postgraduate programs. 

  • Geophysics
  • Hydrogeology
  • Petrology

  • Economic Geology

     The School also offers a PhD program in Hydrogeology.

General Objective 

The general objective of the BSc program in Geology is to produce competent geologists with broad knowledge and practical skills in the geosciences.

Specific Objectives

The specific objectives of the BSc program in Geology are to enable students to:

  • Understand the origin and evolution of the Earth and its inhabitants through the study of rocks, minerals, fossils, and geological elements.
  • Understand the occurrence, characteristics, origin, distribution, and utilization of Earth’s natural resources.
  • Apply appropriate methods and techniques for the exploration and assessment of geological resources.
  • Understand geological processes and assess their environmental impacts and associated hazards.
  • Develop a comprehensive understanding of the geology, natural resources, and geological environment of Ethiopia.
  • Develop the knowledge, practical skills, and professional attitudes required for effective practice in geology.

  2. Investigate and assess geological resources, including mineral, water, energy, and other natural resources.

  4. Study the geological conditions of sites for infrastructure development, including roads, bridges, dams, buildings, and other engineering projects.
  5. Investigate geological processes and assess their impacts on society, infrastructure, and the environment.
  6. Identify, assess, and contribute to the mitigation of geohazards such as earthquakes, landslides, volcanic eruptions, and other geological hazards.
  7. Develop practical skills through fieldwork, laboratory investigations, geological mapping, data analysis, and the use of modern geoscientific techniques.
  8. Apply geological knowledge to address environmental, resource-management, and other societal challenges.

  • A geology graduate can work in the following professional sectors such as;
  • In the exploration and exploitation of metallic and non-metallic minerals 
  • In the exploration and exploitation of energy resources such as Hydrocarbon deposits (Petroleum, coal, Natural gas) and geothermal energy.
  • In the exploration and exploitation as well as management of surface and ground- water. 
  • In the area of civil engineering work such as site investigations, material selection and hazard evaluation for buildings, dams, road, railway, and tunnel constructions.
  • In the environmental protection issues such as in pollution control and avoiding resource depletion problems.
  • In making predictions of the natural disasters such as Earthquakes, Volcanism, Tsunami, land sliding, etc.
  • In the area of Urban and regional planning

  • In the area of geological field mapping
