Bahir Dar University (BDU), Ethiopia and Lappeenranta-Lahti University of Technology (LUT), Finland  would like to accept successful applicants in their 4 year double-degree PhD programme in Applied Mathematics for the September, 2020 entry.  BDU and LUT have formally established Inter-Institutional agreement of cooperation since February, 2019.

In this programme, successful students will register in both universities. Most of the PhD studies will be done in BDU with some coursework exemptions at LUT.  Two - three months visit in LUT might be arranged for students to take additional courses for the double-degree and/or to do research with LUT supervisors in Finland, based on the availability of funds. Up on successful completion of the degree of requirements of existing curriculum in each university, both universities will award their own doctoral degree to successful students according to their prevailing regulations.

Therefore, individuals with MSc degree in mathematics or any related field who applied to MoSHE with BDU as their preference will have additional chance or privilege to be recruited in the BDU-LUT double-degree PhD programme if they fulfill the requirements.  The requirements and application documents include:

  • A copy and original MSc degree(s) or equivalent certificate(s),
  • Two recommendation letters,
  • Recent Curriculum Vitae (CV), 
  • Application letter - this should involve two parts cover letter and research statement.
    • Cover letter (max 1 page) - a concise introduction of the applicant and his/her capability for the position, necessary computational, mathematical and other related backgrounds.
    • Research statement (max 2 page) – this includes past research, project or related experience, current research interest and directions and how this combine with the BDU and LUT collaborative activities.

The PhD Candidate evaluation criteria for the double-degree includes:

  1. Basic knowledge in computational mathematics, statistics, data science, and pure mathematics.
  2. Basic programming/coding skills in Matlab/R/Python/C/Fortran,
  3. A sound research plan,
  4. Ability to independent work, including coding and testing new ideas,
  5. English language knowledge (written and Spoken),
  6. Performance in entrance examination and/or interview,
