Description of the Program:

The general objective of the PhD program is to produce high level professionals in the field of Amharic literature and improve the candidates’ academic qualifications thereby enabling them to handle their teaching, researching and, critical abilities. The program focuses on studying and researching Amharic literature. It will deal with the comparative and interdisciplinary study of Amharic literature. The comparative study and research deal with genres, epoch, other Ethiopian language literatures, African literature etc. The interdisciplinary one deals with the studying and researching Amharic literature in relation to other fields like cultural studies, history, ecology etc.

Eligibility criteria:

The following are requirements to apply for the doctoral program:

  • Applicants who have a Master’s or MPhil Degrees from a recognized university in Amharic Literature, Folklore and Ethiopian Literature, English language and Literature, Theatre, Afan Oromo, Tigrigna, and other Ethiopian Languages, Folklores and Literatures are eligible for the program. Under special circumstances, admission will be open to applicants with MA degrees in Journalism and Communication, History, Sociology, Psychology, and Gender studies. However, such applicants will be required to take the following bridge courses – Alit 5031: History of Ethiopian literature and Theory of literature and criticism I & II with a minimum of B grade.
  • Applicants should submit 3 letters of recommendation, at least one from their graduate instructors and one or more from a referee who is familiar with the applicant’s professional work.
  • Applicants should pass the entrance examination set by the Department of Ethiopian Language(s) and Literature - Amharic, Amharic Literature, Bahir Dar University.
  • Applicants should present official transcripts of their academic records to be sent directly to the University from the issuing institutions.

Tuition Fee:

Applicants may be organization-sponsored or self-sponsored. Both the organization-and self-sponsored applicants will pay fee for education and research based on the University’s by-laws.
