Description of the Program:

The MA program in Ge’ez Language and Literature is envisaged to serve as an advanced intellectual platform for those who already have a fairly good knowledge of Ge’ez. The program intends to study and bring to light the wisdom and intellectual history preserved in this language and literature thereby the country’s perennial classical knowledge and wisdom can be brought back onto intellectual and academic realm of Ethiopia and beyond. It thus gives the opportunity to research the structural properties of the language as well as the socio-cultural, philosophical, historical and artistic aspects of Ge’ez texts beyond their often-narrowly-thought-about religious contents. Therefore, the needs assessment shows that the MA in Ge’ez language and literature will fill out the existing gap in research centers, culture and tourism sectors including archives centers, educational institutions, and so forth. These workplaces have therefore demand experts in the field of Ge’ez.

As profile of the MA in Ge’ez Language and Literature is a two-year program. The program covers diverse issues ranging from fundamental Ge’ez concepts to higher level Ge’ez literary and linguistic studies.

Medium of instruction:

Ge’ez, Amharic and English

Eligibility criteria:

The admission requirements shall be administered by Bahir Dar University Legislation. However for this program, a bachelor degree in any field of study with a knowledge of Ge’ez which will be checked via a test which will be administered by the department.

25 students per section (one section)

Tuition Fee:

Applicants may be organization-sponsored or self-sponsored. Both the organization-and self-sponsored applicants will pay fee for education and research based on the University’s by-laws.
