Master of Arts in Reading and Literacy

Description of the Program:

The Master of Arts in Reading and Literacy is designed to respond to national reading skills problem through training the badly needed professionals in the field of literacy education and reading instructions in mother tongue languages. Qualified literacy personnel help young children build a literacy foundation that will increase their chances of future success both in school and life. Moreover, the program will produce literacy experts that build reading culture in a society by educating teachers about literacy, working in curriculum development for reading skills development in local languages, preparing teachers’ guide for literacy teachers, developing strategies to improve students’ literacy, developing assessment tools to evaluate literacy classes, among others. The graduates can serve as reading specialists, school literacy supervisors, teachers and consultants.

Eligibility criteria:

Students who want to join the program should have a BA degree preferably in Linguistics or other related disciplines, such as Ethiopian Languages & Literature, Foreign Languages & Literature. Besides, applicants need to pass the entrance examination to join the program. Other admission requirements, as stipulated in Senate Legislation of BDU need also be met by applicants to be admitted in the programme.

Tuition Fee:

Applicants may be organization-sponsored or self-sponsored. Both the organization-and self-sponsored applicants will pay fee for education and research based on the University’s by-laws.
