Description of the Program:

The program focuses on the study of Amharic literature and theory of literature and criticism. Regarding the study of Amharic literature, each genre of Amharic literature - Amharic short story, Amharic Novel, Amharic Poetry, Amharic play, and the influences of Geez literature upon Amharic Literature will be its issues. The styles, the themes, and philosophies reflected in the literature along different periods will be dealt. Regarding the theory of literature, it deals with various literary theories like new criticism, structuralism, reader response, feminism, mythic, new-historicism, discourse and critical discourse, post-colonial, eco-criticism, existentialism, deconstruction theories and cultural criticism.

Eligibility criteria:

 The following are application requirements:

· Applicants should have a Bachelor’s Degree from a recognized university in Ethiopian Language(s) and Literature – Amharic, Folklore, Journalism and Communication, English language and literature, Theatre, Afan Oromo, Tigrigna, and Other Ethiopian Languages and Literature, Linguistics, Theology and other related fields.

·  Applicants should have a minimum CGPA of 2.00 in undergraduate studies. 

·  Applicants should submit letters of recommendation, two from their undergraduate instructors and one from a referee who is familiar with the applicant’s professional work. 

· Applicants should pass the entrance examination set by the Department of Ethiopian Language(s) and Literature - Amharic, Bahir Dar University. 

· Applicants should present official transcripts of their academic records to be sent directly to the University from the issuing institutions. 

· Applicants should present a proof of financial support 

· Applicants should fulfill requirements set by the university.

Tuition Fee:

Applicants may be organization-sponsored or self-sponsored. Both the organization-and self-sponsored applicants will pay fee for education and research based on the University’s by-laws.
