Environmental Biotechnology division
Environmental biotechnology is a field of biotechnology that addresses environmental challenges, such as decontamination and removal of pollutants, renewable energy generation, and value addition using living organisms, primarily microorganisms and products thereof, for the efficient production of industrial products and the treatment of environmental pollution. It encompasses applications such as green manufacturing technologies, advancements and applications of biotechnology for environmental management, protection, and sustainable development using the regulations of biological systems for remediation of contaminated environments.
In particular, the current Environmental Biotechnology Institute of Biotechnology, Bahir Dar University focus areas are
- Microbial technology for wastewater treatment (e.g., Nitrification and de-
nitrification in the activated sludge process)
- Biological waste treatment and utilization
- Biovalorization of waste streams (e.g., agro-industrial-wastes and residues…)/waste resource utilization/
- Biological degradation of hazardous wastes and plastic wastes
- Bioremediation (nano-bioremidation, phytoremedation, bioleaching, etc)
- Biosensor development for pollutant monitoring and biocatalysis
- Renewable and clean energy applications
- Microbial fuel cells (MFCs)
- Electromicrobiology
