About Sport Academy

Bahir Dar University Sport Academy known up to 1989 as sport department under student Dean, from 1990 till 1995 as Health and physical education Department under Education faculty and 1996-2012 as sport science department under College of Science in the largest higher educational establishment in the sphere of physical education in Ethiopia originating from 1978 E.C.

The Physical Education Department was carrying out its functions under the Dean of students with the purposes of arranging and conducting co-curricular activities from 1979 E.C up to 1981E.C. Then it was upgraded to a full-fledged unit with a status of an academic and service-giving department under the name of Department of Health and Physical Education in 1982. The department started to render the BSc program for the first time next to Kottebe College of education and AAU (Addis Ababa University) in the history of sports science professional trainings in Ethiopia in 1996 E.C. As a result, the Department has the responsibility of training professionals with standard qualifications and skills in their fields of study.

Our higher education establishment is one of the leading centers in Ethiopia for training highly skilled specialists in the sphere of Physical Education and Sports. Within the time of the sport academy activity more than ten thousand highly skilled specialists in Physical Education and Sport have graduated. Today the total number of students is about 500 regular and summer programs.

Today more than 20 instructors direct academic, educational, scientific, methodical and sports work of students and post-graduates at the chairs and laboratories of the sport academy. All of them have scientific degrees and academic status. Among the teaching staff there are 12 Assistant professors among these 4 are PhDs and 6 lecturers with M.S.c. degrees and 2 technical assistants are found.
