Background

The first graduation of degree program students approved the senate of BDU was 2000. This is the time when the two  ( Polly technique institute and pedagogical teacher education ) merge to form Bahir Dar university and the time in which academic Calendar was prepared for the first time by the university registrar. The registrar office is graduated students by itself for the 19th time in  July 2019.

 Bahir Dar University is one of the well known universities in Ethiopia which consists of six Bands (namely : Engineering and Technology, Natural & Computational Science, Medicine and Health Science , Agriculture &Life Science ,Business & Economics , Social Science and Humanities). Under the university there are four Colleges, three Faculties, five Schools , two Academies and two Institutes. According to the information on June 2012, the university has 1,100 male and 123 female local instructors and 34 male 3 female expatriate academic staffs. The university has 131 academic programs of which 65 are under graduate and 66 are postgraduate programs.

The university has

• 11,806 male, 4,537 female ( a total of 16,343) students in Undergraduate Regular Programs
• 2,290 male ,1,171 female (total of 3,461) in Undergraduate Extension Programs
• 8,324 male &8,244 female ( a total of 16,568 ) distance undergraduates
• 3,589 male &1,127 female ( a total of 4,716) summer programs and
• 2,960 male &675 female ( a total of 3,655) students in Postgraduate programs.

Hence our university, BDU has a total of 28,989 male & 15,754 female (44,743 total) number of students .

• Using regular( under &postgraduate) students only ,the ratio of instructor to students is 1:16
• Among the 7107 first year students ,3005 (925 female & 2078 male) are pre-engineering students which are not included in each school for instructor students ratio calculation.

Local academic staff

The university has:

• 73 male & 0 female (a total of 73) PhD holders.
• 678 male & 78 Female (a total of 756) M.Sc/MA holders.
• 63 male & 8 female (a total of 71) MD/DVM holders.
• 286 male &37 female (a total of 323) at bachelor level.

Expatriate academic staffs

The university also has:

• 17 male & 3 female PhD holders
• 17 male & 0 female MSc/MA holders.

Total number of the expatriate staff is 37. Hence there are 1,134 male & 126 female ( a total of 1,260 local and expatriate academic staffs)
