UTSW-BORNE symposium commences

A symposium organized by University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center Professionals in collaboration with Bahir Dar University is taking place for two days at Wisdom Tower, Bahir Dar, Ethiopia. 

It has been learned that the symposium is one segment of an initiative called BORNE- Bahir Dar Outreach for Neurology Education. Speaking on the occasion, President of Bahir Dar University, Dr. Firew Tegegne thanked all who participated to the realization of symposium. The president took the opportunity to give a brief account of Bahir Dar University, and the achievements made by the university in multifaceted areas, particularly on education, research and community services.

The President emphasized about the University’s vision to become a research University. In this regard, he addressed the growing trend of research culture in the University. He also mentioned the newly inaugurated hospital of the University as a success story and as a good opportunity for professionals in the field.While speaking about the specialty programs the University currently runs, the president mentioned limitations in terms of establishing sub-specialty programs in the University. He said this is one of the areas the University would like to work in collaboration with Institutions like Texas University.The president finally bestowed special thanks to Dr. Mehari G/Yohannes and his team for making the conference happen and wished successful deliberations in the two days.

Dr Mehari on his part appreciated Bahir Dar University for the great partnership. He also thanked his fellow colleagues and students for trusting him to come all the way to Bahir Dar University from the other side of the Atlantic. 
Dr Mehari made the first presentation of the conference focusing on organizing stroke management resources. In his talk, Dr Mehari raised several points and research outputs including his own that coined two new Amharic acronyms used in relation to stroke and its clinical symptoms. Then, the second paper was presented under the title “Goals of rehabilitation after stroke.”

A great number of health professionals from different institutions, teachers from BDU and students have participated in the conference.The symposium is scheduled to continue until July 17, 2019.
