School of Law National Research Conference

School of Law organized a national research conference on the theme ‘Peace building, Reconstruction and Transitional Justice in Ethiopia’ on 15 June 2023 in Peda Campus, Old Senate Hall. The welcome speech was made by Mr. Tegegne Zergaw, Dean of the Law School. The Opening remark was also made by Mr. Birhanu Gedif, V/ President for Administrative Affairs of the University. Keynote address was delivered by Dr. Dadimos Haile.

The following six research papers were presented at the conference;

  1. Transitional Justice in Dealing with Gross Violations in Contexts of the Northern Ethiopian Armed Conflict: Inadequacy of the Existing Institutions by Kenaw Tesfaye
  2. Critical appraisal of challenges and prospects of Ethiopia’s national dialogue by Jara Samuel
  3. National Dialogue Experiences in the Horn of Africa and Beyond: Lessons for Ethiopia by Awol Ali
  4. Reversing Community Relationship from the I-It to I-Thou as a tool for Conflict Resolution and Peace Building in Ethiopia by Sisay Tamrat
  5. Promoting Transitional Justice and Inclusive Governance for Sustainable Peace and Stability in Ethiopia by Markos Tsegaye
  6. Conflict Early warning system for peace building in Ethiopia by Negesse Asnake

The presentation and discussion sessions were moderated by Dr. Ebabu C., Worku Y. and Degwale G. Questions and comments were made by conference participants from the university lecturers, government legal experts, political parties, students and other invited guests.

In the closing remark, the School Dean thanked the organizing committee, presenters, moderators, participants, media and others who have been working tirelessly for the conference to be successful.

Bahir Dar University, School of Law organized a National Workshop on the Roles and Responsibilities of various Stakeholders in the Upcoming National Dialogue on 1 March 2022 at Wisdom Hall. Opening speech was made by the President of Bahir Dar University, Dr. Firew Tegegne. During the workshop, scholars have presented their research works. Topics presented during the workshop were:

BDU Law School won the 5th Ethiopian Law Schools National Moot Court Competition on the “International Humanitarian Law”

 

Bahir Dar University (BDU), School of Law organized the 5th Ethiopian Law Schools National Moot Court Competition on the “International Humanitarian Law” in collaboration with the International Committee on the Red Cross (ICRC) from May 28-29, 2021. The competition was initially conducted among 21 teams. From the 21 teams, top 8 teams were selected and competition continued. The Competition provides a unique opportunity for Ethiopian Law students to engage in an intellectual exercise on the current and sensitive issues of “International Humanitarian Law” that enhanced their substantive understanding of the subject matter and developed an expertise in practice.

After very tough competition was made, the BDU School of Law became among one of the top 4 class of teams of the competition. Finally, School won the 5th National Moot Court Competition on "International Humanitarian Law".

The winner team (BDU Law School) will participate in the Regional Moot Competition which will be held in Arusha, Tanzania, by representing Ethiopia.

Bahir Dar University, School of Law has conducted National Workshop on Rule of Law, Democracy and Election

 

Bahir Dar University, School of Law organized a national workshop on a timely theme: rule of law, democracy and elections on May 15, 2021, in the Old Senate Hall, Peda Campus. An opening remark was made by the Dean of the School Mr. Tegegn Zergaw. Following it, Dr Wondimagegn Tadesse from Addis Ababa University made his keynote address. In the workshop, more than five research papers were presented for discussion. It has been evident that the presentations invited a very warm question and answer session benefiting all those who participated in the workshop. It was very fruitful workshop of the year.
